Syllabus:

This ONline/face-to-face (hybrid) will emphasize the integration and selection of letterforms and type styles as they relate to design for the printed page. As in all of the graphic design sequence, this course is designed to put you in touch with the design process by developing certain technical and perceptual skills required for the solution of graphic design problems.

Primary emphasis will be placed on:
The use of typographic design to demonstrate a knowledge of the elements and principles of design, organization of design elements, and most importantly individual interpretation. Discussions will include the evolution of typography, styles in typographic design, type selection, type specification, typographic readability, and the dynamics of typographic legibility in relation to new computer technology.

Format & Requirements:

Lecture/Discussion:
Usually at the beginning of the period on Mondays. This will include pertinent technical and perceptual information. Aside from project demos. and lectures, all of the materials and information is provided online on this web site.
Projects:
There will be 1 project every 2 weeks. This is followed by a discussion/critique at the beginning of the period in which the assignment is due.

Grading:
Will be based on the successful completion of the 4 projects listed at left.

Grading procedure:
10=A, 9+=A-, 9=B+, 8=B, 7=C, 6=D. Due dates are important and it is your responsibility to turn in projects on time.

MessageBoard:

Specific messages, important due dates and FAQ's will be put up on the MessageBoard and Course Schedule pages (see links at left). Check in frequently to receive updated information.

Materials:

You will need to furnish one zip disk or a CD-RW. Additional materials may be required to finish specific assignments.

Lab Access:

You will have lab access at De Anza during scheduled class time and posted hours in AT101. Face-to-Face meetings are posted on the MessageBoard page at left. Check in frequently for updates and answers to FAQ's.

Texts:

There is no required text for this course. All of the information and materials for this course are contained on this web site. There will be specific recommended texts.
