FIVE:
WEB PAGE DESIGN...10 points

Project: In this project you are to design a WEB homepage using design #4 from project #2. Think of something that is unique to the design that would become the concept for your page. You might want to design a logo for the Metropolitan Symphony that could be incorporated into your page design. Do some WEB surfing and find some interesting sites. I will give you some URL's that I think are interesting. You are not designing an entire site but you will need to keep in mind the following:

1. Your homepage should reflect what the entire site would look like
2.
It should indicate how many topics there are (ie. anchors)
3.
Your homepage should be visually exciting

As you might expect there are many more issues involved in designing a WEB site, some of which will be discussed in class as you move through the process.

Working Time: Final day of instruction.

Objective:
To become familiar with existing Web site design in relationship to the creative use of typography. At least ninety percent of the sites on the Web are badly designed. Primarily because they were not created by a designer or artist. The challenge becomes creating a well designed site and at the same time make it informative and content driven. Keep in mind the following when viewing or designing your homepage:

1. Where am I?
2.
How did I get here?
3.
How many topics are there?
4.
Where is the index (site map) to this site?

Limits:
The format will be 771 x 500 pixels at 72 ppi. This is a good standard size to start with based on current monitors. You will need to convert your image so that it can be compatible with Photoshop because you are essentially adapting your design into a different format, and since Photoshop is the software of choice for image creation for the Web. Details will be discussed in class. You are not required to write any html coding for this project, however, if you know html or an authoring software, you may use it to create your page. Design concept and consistency is all important. The following are some basic limitations in Web site design:

    1. Limited control of font choice in html coding
    2.
No leading control unless you are using style sheets
    3.
Limited word/letter spacing control unless you are using style sheets
    4.
    Few typographic characters
    5.
Anyone can rip off your design... WHAT A CONCEPT!
